Telling Ain’t Training

I don’t know too many managers who haven’t experienced the frustration of introducing a new process or tool to their teams, only to have the training fall on deaf ears.

“I’ve told them and told them, and they don’t seem to get it”, goes the refrain. My question usually is, did you tell them or did you train them?

When you tell someone something, they might intellectually understand what you want, but there’s no guarantee they can perform the skill involved. Yet how many of us have rolled out a new process by cramming everyone into a 30-minute “training”, and basically telling them what to do and nothing more? How did that work for you?

That’s because telling someone isn’t the same as actually training someone and ensuring they can do what you’re asking of them.

True training entails several steps that a simple demonstration doesn’t. To lead more effective training sessions with your team, join us for Developing Winning Trainers, August 22-25th at MoreVent in West Chester, PA.

This will be a hands-on workshop that you will be able to implement as soon as you get back to your office! This class is only offered a couple times a year, don’t miss out!
